Our story
Featherstone connects the Northeast's finest artisan bakeries with the chefs, hotels, cafés and foodservice teams who rely on them. Curated, delivered daily, invoiced once.
How it all began
Featherstone began in 1984. Founder Joel Schonfeld, a lifelong picky eater whose one great love was bread, left a career in fabric design to fix something he kept noticing over dinner: the bread in New York's best restaurants was not good enough.
It was the era when chefs and their restaurants were becoming celebrities: Le Bernardin, Gotham Bar and Grill, Le Cirque, Gramercy Tavern. Bread, long dismissed as a giveaway, had suddenly become part of what made a great meal.
It is the first food you taste when you sit down. It sets the tone for what is to come next.
In those days bread became a huge part of the competition between celebrity chefs. The timing was perfect.
Forty years on
We started with a single truck, no sleep, and a beeper. Today Featherstone runs out of a 20,000 square foot warehouse in the Bronx, with our own fleet on the road every day, reaching customers up to 150 miles from New York City.
Partnering with more than 40 of the region's best bakeries, we are your eyes and ears on the street. Any new item coming to New York comes through Featherstone first.
How it works
We carry over 4,000 products so you can cherry pick the best of the best, without juggling a dozen bakery accounts, a dozen delivery windows and a dozen bills at the end of the month.
Order everything from one place, from one team that knows your account and your menu.
Every bakery on your list arrives together, on our own fleet, on routes built for freshness.
One statement covering every vendor, instead of reconciling a stack of them each month.
Service
Our reputation for customer service is the thing we are proudest of. The majority of our staff has been with us for fifteen years or more. Our overnight manager starts his shift at 10pm to make sure every delivery goes out right.
In four decades, the weather has never stopped a delivery.
